The paper presents very briefly the present traffic safety situation for Lithuania. Accident statistics for the last twenty years reveal some odd features. Following a trend of decreasing figures for the beginning of the 1980s, the period 1988 to 1991 saw a sudden and sharp increase in both fatalities and injuries. The middle of the 1990s was similar to the beginning of the 1980s. However, this development has been broken by a new alarming negative trend starting in 1995. Especially the number of injuries has increased in a dramatic way. In the paper these figured are detailed and some of the main reason are listed together with proposed remedies.
