The grocery retailing industry is at present the centre of an extensive media debate concerning food prices, the number of participants on the Swedish grocery retailing market and the interest of new participants. Our attention has by that been directed towards the development of the grocery retailing industry and the present competitive situation to discern possible developments in future competition of the grocery retailing market. Purpose: The purpose is to contribute with and discuss future possible developments concerning the competitive situation on the Swedish grocery retailing market. We intend to do this with background and analysis of the development of the grocery retailing industry during the 20th century, focusing on the latest five to ten years, and also the present competitive situation. Realization: The study is based on interviews with representatives of ICA, Coop, Axfood, BergendahlsGruppen and Grocery Manufacturers of Sweden. Reports from the Swedish Competition Authority and articles have as secondary data supplemented the material from the interviews. Result: Further competitive changes in Swedish grocery retailing will take place through consolidation, internationalization, new participants, sliding/mixing lines of business and cooperation across businesses. Possible developments have common features since we perceive that the future competitive situation in the industry is characterized by more connected and multidimensional relationships than at present.
