This project assessed the health costs of road-traffic related air pollution in the three countries using a common methodological framework. This report presents the results of the air pollution part of the project. The main task was to estimate the exposure of the population to the ambient concentration of particulate matter. The annual mean value of PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 m) has been selected as indicator for air pollution. Population exposure was calculated both for total PM10 and for road-traffic related PM10.In the framework of the preparation for the Transport Environment and Health segment of the WHO Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, to be held in London in June 1999, a tri-lateral project was jointly carried out by Austria, France and Switzerland.
