That publication, which included English, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish terms and definitions for some 230 essential concepts, has been widely accepted in the Nordic countries and has also aroused interest outside these countries. It has been translated into several other languages as well, and PIARC (World Road Association) for example, has shown an interest in adopting the Terminology. Technical Committee 53 has commissioned an expert group to revise the Terminology. The work on the revision took into account comments on the earlier edition received from bodies within the Nordic countries and Germany. The objective was also to expand the terminology in areas where needed, including some essential terms regarding traffic engineering. The new edition contains some 490 terms and definitions. During the work on the revision, a draft new edition was circulated for comment to many organisations in the Nordic countries as well as to Germany, the Netherlands, PIARC, etc. The concept of Transport Informatics includes a number of applications involving data handling and telecommunications related to transport, or to quote the terminology entry: “A group of techniques, using information technology and telecommunications, in vehicles and infrastructure, supporting or performing services for transport”
