This report aims at providing the most recent state-of-the-art of classifying road surfaces with respect to their influence on traffic noise in preparation to the development of a proposal for such a classification that would be adapted to urban conditions. The information reported here has been obtained as the result of an enquiry sent by the author to experts in all European countries including Switzerland. The responses obtained cover nineteen countries. Among the received contributions, a state-of-the-art report from U. Sandberg [27] has been very useful in providing complementary information about some European countries as well as information about USA and Japan. In addition, two European projects recently completed are also quoted, namely HARMONOISE and SILVIA, as they include classification proposals.
