This report is the first working report in a Swedish project called UTVALTS. The project is developing a proposal for a standard for a management system for traffic safety. More information on the project is available on www.sp.se/trafiksakerhet. The report contains a world wide study on initiatives taken to improve traffic safety, and the possible use and/or development of management systems for traffic safety management. Worldwide, an estimated 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year and as many as 50 million are injured. The Swedish Road Administration identifies four main contributors to increased traffic safety: speed, use of seat belt, no drugs or alcohol and safe vehicles. The European Commission highlights the responsibility for traffic safety, stating it is a result af many activities on all levels. The commission appeals in the "European Road Safety Charter", to all civil society organisations to provide a contribution to increasing road safety in Europe. It is a platform to exchange experiences and new ideas towards greater safety on European roads in order to achieve the common goal: halving the number of traffic fatalities by 2010. In 2006 the European Transport Safety Council, ETSC, reports on progress in all EU-member countries. The overview shows an improvement of the implementation of legislation regarding speed, alcohol and safety belts. All organisations should look at traffic safety as an obvious contributor to the company's value-adding process. FR2000 Business Management is an integrated management system developed for small and intermediate businesses in Sweden. It includes quality, environment, occupational health, safety, and competence maintenance. A survey concerning traffic safety management in haulier companies is being conducted during September 2006, and will be included in our next working report. The study for this report shows many interesting traffic safety initiatives, mainly in the industrialised countries. We can see a readiness to include these initiatives in a management system, some efforts already being done in Australia, UK and Sweden. These efforts will be included in our further project progress, and our standard proposal.
