The DRI-DWW Noise Abatement Programme is a joint cooperation between the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Institute (DWW) in the Netherlands and the Danish Road Institute (DRI) carried out within the framework of the Dutch Noise Innovation Programme. The project modified bitumen used for porous pavements is one of the seven themes included in the cooperation. The over-all aim of this study is to gain knowledge about the performance of modified bitumen used in the Netherlands from a micro-level investigation of the geometrics of the bituminous mastic and polymer modifier and to relate this to the performance of porous pavements on the roads. In the present report a strategy for the selection of road sections is developed aiming at a detailed understanding of the effect of the different parameters that are important for the ravelling process. Pavements of different age, performances, traffic volume and loads, design, road location and geometry are included. A set of pre-liminary working hypotheses for the ravelling process is listed, and the research methodology for selection of roads, measurements on roads and in laboratory is out-lined. Finally the organisation and time plan is given.
