Computation of Vehicle Density on Roads From Satellite Images Shinmura, Fumito ; Ogawa, Sumio ; Saji, Hitoshi

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: Bryssel ITS in daily life: 16th world congress and exhibition on intelligent transport systems and services, Stockholm 21-25 September 2009. Paper, 2009Description: 11 sSubject(s): Bibl.nr: VTI P1835:16 [World]Location: Abstract: In the collection of traffic information, traffic engineers usually use methods with apparatus installed at the roadside. However, by using such methods, it is difficult to collect traffic information simultaneously over a wide area. This paper proposes a method of collecting traffic information simultaneously over a wide area using satellite images. First, the project extracts the road areas from a satellite image using a digital map, and then detects the edges of vehicles on the roads. Then, the project computes the vehicle density from the number of edges on each road.
