Between the years 2008 and 2009 the number of journeys increased with 6 million, an increase of 0.5 percent. Between 2008 and 2009, journeys by bus increased by 2 million while public transports with underground, tramway, ship and train increased with 1 million journeys each. Between 2008 and 2009, the number of journeys made by public transports has increased in 8 counties and decreased in 13. The largest increase in percent was found for the counties Västerbotten, Halland, and Värmland while Gävleborg, Gotland, and Jönköping had the largest decrease in journeys. Of all journeys made in Sweden, more than half, 55 percent, took place in the Stockholm County. 18 percent of the total number of journeys was made in Västra Götaland County, and 11 percent in Skåne County. The average journey was shortest in Stockholm County and Västra Götaland County, 7 and 9 kilometers, respectively. Like previous years, the difference between the counties is substantial regarding the supply of public transport. The supply of public transport is larger in densely populated regions than in less populated counties. In Stockholm County and Uppsala County, 114 kilometers of public transportation are supplied per inhabitant. Stockholm also stands out as the county in which most journeys per inhabitant are made, 345 journeys in 2009, followed by Västra Götaland County with 141 journeys per inhabitant. In 2009, the costs and revenues for public transport amounted to SEK 28 billion and SEK 14 billion, respectively. In addition, subsidies amounted to almost SEK 14 billion. Since 1999, the costs have increased by 50 percent, while the revenues increased by 38 percent. In the same period, subsidies from municipalities and county councils increased by 78 percent. The average cost per journey in 2009 was SEK 22, while the revenue per journey was SEK 11. This means that half of the cost of a journey is financed by revenues, while the rest is covered by subsidies. In all counties the cost of a journey by public transport was substantially higher than the revenue. Skåne County and Halland County had the largest proportion of cost-coverage by revenue in the country, above 60 percent. The smallest proportion of revenue was 25 percent from Gotland County. The number of journeys made by public transport increased from 1 053 to 1 251 million journeys between 1999 and 2009, which corresponds to an increase of 19 percent.
