The present report Road Freight Traffic - National and International traffic by Swedish Lorries 2009 is a description of both national and international traffic by Swedish registered lorries. Road freight traffic decreased during 2009 compared with the previous year Freight tonne-kilometres diminished by 17 percent, from 42 to 35 billion tonnekilometres. Professional traffic was reduced by 10 percent, from 2.9 to 2.6 billion kilometres. The transported quantity of goods decreased by 9 percent, from 367 to 334 million tonnes, whiles the number of haulages only decreased by 1 percent, from 37.9 to 37.7 million haulages. The reductions measured are primarily as a result of the recession resulting in a reduced demand for freight transport. With the exception of the decrease in the number of haulages, all decreases are statistically significant. The road freight traffic was predominantly domestic professional road traffic The road freight traffic was predominantly domestic. In 2009, 92 percent of Swedish freight tonne-kilometres occurred within Sweden. Of the freight tonne-kilometres driven, 30 out of just over 32 billion tonne-kilometres were accounted for by professional traffic. A quarter of the professional traffic consisted of empty runs In 2009, national freight transport with empty runs amounted to 568 million kilometres, which corresponds to almost a quarter of all national professional transport. Transport of ore, coal and petroleum products are examples of commodities where there is a large fraction of empty runs. There is a decrease in transport of dangerous goods on the roads The reduction of dangerous goods on the roads also continued in 2009. Both the freight tonne-kilometres and the quantity of goods transported have decreased by approximately a third between 2000 and 2009. In 2009, just over 10 million tonnes of dangerous goods were transported by road.´International freight tonne-kilometres decreased by one third During 2009, the freight tonne-kilometres for international Swedish road goods transport amounted to 2.9 billion tonne-kilometres. Compared with 2008, this represents a reduction of 34 percent. Norway and Germany are dominating destinations for international road freight traffic Just over half of the freight tonne-kilometres from Sweden to international destinations in 2009 consisted of traffic to Norway. Among the EU countries, Germany dominates the freight tonne-kilometres from Sweden abroad.
