Subject(s): Online resources: Abstract: This report presents results on the effects of railway noise based on empirical socio-acoustic field studies in residential areas at different distances from the "Ostkustbanan" in Sollentuna municipality. The railway line is one of the most trafficked railway lines in Sweden with 481 trains/per 24 hours. The main purpose of the study was to generate knowledge about the impact of very extensive railway traffic on people's health and well-being. The results are compared with results within the TVANE-project performed in areas with fewer trains (Töreboda/Falköping with 124 trains/24 hours) and with previous studies performed in the same residential areas in Sollentuna 7 years earlier. The investigations were carried out using postal questionnaires that contained questions on experiences of the living environment, health, well-being, annoyance, as well as other impacts of railway and road traffic noise. The investigation was conducted in three residential areas located along the "Ostkustbanan" in Sollentuna during April-May 2008 and included a total of 715 people. Exposure to noise (LAeq,24h, Lden, Lnight and LAFmax) from railway was calculated for all participants and stated as free field values at the most exposed side of the facade. The distance between the home and the railway was also determined.
