Freight transport demand in Europe has grown during the past decades, especially concerning temperature sensitive goods. Concurrently, road transportation has also increased, because it is one of the most important and widely employed means of distribution of such goods. Due to increasing congestion of road transport in and between urban areas and the search for a sustainable transport system, intermodal transport (road/rail) is an attractive option. The present study is part of a project called TESS: Intermodal Solutions for Trans-European Temperature Sensitive Shipments and comprises its first segment or work package. The bearing idea of the project is to bring together actors from the supply chain to develop a model case for international intermodal temperature sensitive goods. The focus of the project is a corridor between Italy and Scandinavia.
