  • Driver experience of unstudded snow tyres designed for Central Europe and for the Nordic countries
Subject(s): Online resources: Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare driver experience with unstudded winter tyres specifically designed for winter conditions in Central Europe and those for the Nordic Countries. In particular, the study was designed to compare whether drivers using tyres designed for Central Europe had more frequently been involved in road accidents or near accidents than drivers using tyres for the Nordic Countries, and whether these situations differ by driver group. The data were collected by telephone interviews with 38 drivers who responded. Half of the drivers used Central European tyres and half Nordic tyres. The main results showed that there is no difference in driver experience or the number of occurred road accidents by driver group. In addition, it cannot be argued that there is a difference in the frequency of near accidents or hazardous situations, although the drivers who used Central European tyres reported somewhat more hazardous situations. The quality and circumstances of near accidents were fairly similar by driver group as well. Furthermore, both driver groups assessed that the hazardous situation would most frequently have resulted in intersection accidents. Given the limited results obtained by the phone interviews, it is recommended that detailed tyre markings should be recorded in accident registers in the future. In addition, the scientific evaluation of accident risk by tyre type calls for detailed exposure data.
