Av eleverna på de olika sjökaptensprogrammen vid Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar finns det varje år ett antal som inte fullföljer sin utbildning och tar ut examen. Vi blev intresserade av om det finns något samband, mellan studiebakgrund och om huruvida man slutar helt, inte blir utexaminerad eller fortsätter sin karriär till sjöss. I undersökningen ingick åtta klasser som antagits till de olika sjöbefälsprogrammen för däckssidan vid Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar, mellan åren 1997-1999. Vi fick tillgång till den information som krävdes för att genomföra undersökningen via Sjöfartshögskolans arkiv och sjömansregistret på Sjöfartsverket. De olika individerna delades in i olika grupper beroende på vilken studiebakgrund de haft innan de blev antagna till Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar. Datan analyserades sedan enligt en statistisk longitudinell analys, sammanställdes och presenterades i diagramform för att se om det gick att utläsa något samband mellan avhopp, examinering och någon speciell studiebakgrund. Vi kontaktade personal på Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar, för att se om det finns något underlag eller tidigare studier som behandlar samma ämne vi valt att studera, men fick negativt svar på vår förfrågan. Vi har alltså inte fått tag i något underlag eller en så kallad referensram att knyta våra resultat till, eftersom det inte finns några tidigare genomförda studier på området, eller undersökningar, från Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar. Resultatet av vår undersökning har blivit att det inte går att visa något samband mellan studiebakgrund och anledningen till att studenter hoppar av under pågående utbildning, inte tar ut sin examen, samt inte blir aktiva sjöbefäl. Samma resultat påvisade en jämförelse med högskoleresultaten. Vi föreslår Kalmar Sjöfartshögskola att leta vidare för att finna svaret. Vi anser att det bästa sättet är att skapa en egen databas genom att låta alla nyintagna studenter besvara ett frågeformulär för att skapa ett underlag för en egen studie. Eventuellt kan man ta hjälp av rekryteringsbolag för att utforma bra och passande frågeställningar till de nyintagna eleverna. Detta för att få ett beslutsunderlag för att hitta de rätta intagningskriterierna för att få fler motiverade studenter som stannar kvar, samt fortsätter sina karriärer till sjöss.

A number of students on the different programmes at Kalmar Maritime Academy are quitting their ongoing education, without getting their degree, and does not continue their career in shipping. We got interested in examining if there was any connections and factors to be found, between students who graduated and continued their career in shipping, and students who decided to quit their ongoing studies altogether without getting their degree, just looking at what educational background the students had when they applied to Kalmar Maritime Academy. In our study we examined eight classes with students that begun their education at Kalmar Maritime Academy between the years of 1997 to 1999. We got our information through the Kalmar Maritime Academy’s archives and through Sjöfartsverkets registry of Seamen in the Swedish merchant fleet. The students were divided into different groups depending on which educational background they came from and this data was later analyzed according to scientific methods and statistic analysis to see if any connections between the various variables was to be found. We contacted Kalmar Maritime Academy and asked them if there had been any research conducted in the matter, or if we could take part of any statistics concerning the same, but the answer we got was negative. Nor had there been any inspections neither could we get hold of any statistics directly from the school itself, since there were no such examinations conducted. Because of this we do not have any frame or former results to tie our study to. In conclusion, the results we came up with does not show that there could be said to be any connection between educational background and whether a student graduates from the academy, and continues to sail, or not. Therefore, our suggestion is that Kalmar Maritime Academy tries to find a way to motivate more students to finish their studies. One way of doing this might be to create a database, and have new students answer a number of questions when they start their studies at Kalmar Maritime Academy, this, to give the school a basis to conduct a study of their own and get more motivated students that stays on, graduates and continues their careers in the shipping industry.
