By: Contributor(s): Series: Master thesis ; GM:0560Publication details: Göteborg Göteborgs universitet. Handelshögskolan, 2009Description: 118 sSubject(s): Online resources: Dissertation note: Examensarbete Abstract: Currently ship recycling industry is centered in four Asian countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and China. More than 90% of ship recycling is done these four countries. Though proper ship recycling practices ensure a sustainable development for shipping activity for the world, but since there are many hazardous materials contained in ship recycling process, it could be very dangerous for the environment and for the health and safety of the workers. The present ship recycling practices in these nations are not up to the standards corresponding to Safety, Health and Environment. Environmental pollution and poor worker safety and health conditions have been observed in this industry in those focus countries. Those problems have triggered considerable concern in the national and international bodies such as IMO, ILO, UNEP, national Governments and national and international NGOs. It is also found that the future trends, potential volume and concepts for ship recycling are promising. In addition, it was detected by the study that some difficulties and obstacles are present in the process of improving the Safety, Health and Environmental performance in ship recycling industry in Asian developing countries. For the green ship recycling facilities, it is important to have a prior ship recycling plan and schedule of operation during the ship recycling process. Asian developing countries require four important sectors to address for developing green and sustainable ship recycling procedure. The four sectors are socio-economic factor, natural environment, legal base and supplier responsibilities. Later it has recommended the process for overcoming barriers to develop a sustainable ship recycling practice in that region.
