Why do we give up cycling?

By: Publication details: Köpenhamn : Vejdirektoratet, 2019Description: 16 sSubject(s): Online resources: Notes: Engelsk översättning av: "Hvorfor stiller vi cyklen?" Abstract: Denmark is a cycling nation. Along with the Netherlands, we are two of the countries where people cycle the most. The bicycle is part of our culture, something we are proud of and it is also one of the elements that we want to use to promote our national brand. And not least, cycling has a number of positive effects – it makes us healthier, it is good for the environment and it helps reduce the car traffic and thus congestion in many areas. However, at a national level, we are seeing either a stagnation or an outright decline in bicycle traffic. There are rather large fluctuations year to year, but that is the visible trend over a number of years. There is a relatively large degree of uncertainty when it comes to statistics for the number of cyclists, and it is particularly in the countryside and the smaller cities that fewer people are riding their bicycles. However, if you look at Copenhagen alone, the number of cyclists is increasing, and that same trend is somewhat apparent in Aarhus. On that basis, the Danish Road Directorate has asked the consultancy fi rm Wilke to investigate what causes people to stop using their bicycles or use them significantly less in many parts of the country. The aim is to increase our knowledge about the factors behind this development and this knowledge can be used to target initiatives to promote cycling even better. The study deals with people who live outside the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. Whereby it is not a study of the nation-wide development. The study is also based on people who don’t ride their bicycles or who only do so occasionally in order to identify the reasons for the decline in cycling today.

Denmark is a cycling nation. Along with the Netherlands,
we are two of the countries where people cycle the most.
The bicycle is part of our culture, something we are proud
of and it is also one of the elements that we want to use
to promote our national brand. And not least, cycling has
a number of positive effects – it makes us healthier, it is
good for the environment and it helps reduce the car traffic and thus congestion in many areas.
However, at a national level, we are seeing either a stagnation
or an outright decline in bicycle traffic. There are
rather large fluctuations year to year, but that is the visible
trend over a number of years. There is a relatively large
degree of uncertainty when it comes to statistics for the
number of cyclists, and it is particularly in the countryside
and the smaller cities that fewer people are riding their
bicycles. However, if you look at Copenhagen alone, the
number of cyclists is increasing, and that same trend is
somewhat apparent in Aarhus.
On that basis, the Danish Road Directorate has asked the
consultancy fi rm Wilke to investigate what causes people
to stop using their bicycles or use them significantly less
in many parts of the country. The aim is to increase our
knowledge about the factors behind this development and
this knowledge can be used to target initiatives to promote
cycling even better.
The study deals with people who live outside the municipalities
of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. Whereby it is
not a study of the nation-wide development. The study is
also based on people who don’t ride their bicycles or who
only do so occasionally in order to identify the reasons for
the decline in cycling today.
