The indexes are used to assess the wheel-rail contact conditions and provide a complement to equivalent conicity. GIPw is the inclination (gradient) at the running circle of the wheel, and GIPr is the corresponding inclination of the rail profile. GIP is the normalized difference between GIPw and GIPr.
