Contemporary cost distributions for domestic long-distance travel in Sweden : PRIMO project deliverable 1

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: [Borlänge] : [Trafikverket], 2020Description: 51 sSubject(s): Online resources: Abstract: Travel fares have an important impact on travel behaviour and are therefore vital for forecasting and policy analysis. Modelling domestic long-distance travel has since long been based on the assumption that only few, often just one, travel fare exists for a specific mode and a specific origin destination (OD) pair. In contrast, air and train operators are using yield management procedures to optimise their pricing and supply of different fares. One result of these procedures is a wide range of travel fares for each mode and OD pair. To some extent, this has been recognised in Swedish long-distance modellingresearch, but so far, the models used in transportation planningpractice in Sweden have been constrained to use simplified assumptions on long-distance travel. The PRIMO project aims at developing methods to consider operator pricing procedures in practical planning. The purpose of this report is twofold: 1) To present an overview of contemporary cost variation for long-distance travel in Sweden using the five data sets described above and2) To describe the state-of-practice for representing travel costs for long-distance travel in large-scale transport models in Sweden and Europe.
