Rail freight with the Fehmarn belt fixed link : forecasts, challenges and solutions

By: Publication details: [Köpenhamn] : Greater Copenhagen Committee, 2023Description: 117 sSubject(s): Online resources: Summary: The tunnel under the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany is planned to open in 2029. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link (FBFL) will remove a bottleneck and reduce transport times, contributing to efficient logistics between Scandinavia and Continental Europe. However, the market share for rail freight is currently low, and the efficiency and costs of the rail services not sufficiently competitive. The purpose of this study is to: - describe possible future rail freight volumes across the FBFL in the years 2030. 2035 and 2040; - identify infrastructure problems and other obstacles or barriers that must be solved to fully utilize the FBFL and increase railway competitiveness; - propose solutions on how to overcome the challenges identified in step 2, thereby closing the gap between forecasts and EU targets.
